530 Login Authentication Failed When Connecting Over FTP

The "530 Login authentication failed" error in FileZilla and other FTP clients means your username and password were rejected by the server. The control connection reached the server fine, so this is a credentials problem, not a network one. In most cases the fix is to use your full cPanel username and the correct password, or to reset the FTP password in cPanel.

01. Check Your Username and Password

A 530 error is the server saying "those credentials are wrong." Before changing anything, rule out the simple causes:

  • Caps Lock - passwords are case sensitive
  • Trailing space - pasting a password often grabs an extra space or newline; type it by hand
  • Wrong password entirely - the FTP password is your cPanel password, not your email account password and not your billing/client area password
  • Old saved password - if you changed your cPanel password recently, FileZilla may still have the old one saved in Site Manager

In FileZilla's message log at the top of the window you will see the exact exchange ending in 530 Login authentication failed. That confirms the server received your login attempt and rejected the credentials.

02. The Right Username Format

There are two kinds of FTP login on a cPanel account, and they use different username formats:

Extra FTP account

Username: the full address [email protected]

Password: the password you set when you created it

Created under cPanel > FTP Accounts, scoped to one folder.

The most common 530 for an extra FTP account is entering just user instead of [email protected]. The server cannot tell which account you mean without the domain, so it rejects the login.

03. Reset the FTP Password in cPanel

If you are not sure the password is correct, reset it:

  1. Log in to cPanel at https://yourdomain.com/cpanel or through your client area
  2. For the main account, change your cPanel password under the user menu (top right) > Password & Security. See How to Change Your cPanel Password
  3. For an extra FTP account, go to Files > FTP Accounts, find the account, and click "Change Password"
  4. Update the saved password in FileZilla's Site Manager (File > Site Manager) so it is not still using the old one
Tip

Avoid special characters that FTP clients sometimes mishandle, such as backslashes or spaces, when setting an FTP password. A long password of letters and numbers is both strong and reliable.

04. Repeated 530 Errors Can Trigger a Firewall Block

If you enter the wrong password several times in a row, the server firewall treats it as a possible attack and temporarily blocks your IP address. After that, instead of a clean 530 you will see a connection timeout or "connection refused," because the firewall is now dropping your traffic before FTP even answers.

If FTP suddenly stops responding after a few failed logins, check and clear the block:

  • Use the Firewall Unblock tool to check whether your IP is blocked and release it
  • Once unblocked, confirm your credentials are correct before trying again, so you do not get re-blocked

05. Other Causes

The account is suspended

A suspended hosting account rejects FTP logins. If your site is also down, the account may be suspended for billing or a policy issue. Check your client area and any email from us.

Connecting to the wrong server

If you recently migrated or your DNS changed, you may be connecting to an old server that no longer has your account. Use your server's hostname or the direct IP from your welcome email as the FTP host rather than your domain name.

SFTP vs FTP mismatch

SFTP (port 22) uses your SSH credentials, which may differ from FTP. If you set the protocol to "SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol" in FileZilla, make sure SSH access is enabled on the account and that you are using the SSH username and key or password, not the FTP one.

Still Getting 530?

If you have reset the password and confirmed the username format and still cannot log in, open a ticket with the exact username you are using (never the password) and we will check the account from our side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the FTP 530 Login authentication failed error mean?

A 530 means the FTP server rejected your username or password. The login reached the server but was not accepted. The usual causes are a mistyped password, using your email instead of the cPanel or FTP account username, or a disabled or deleted FTP account.

How do I fix FTP error 530?

Re-enter the exact FTP username and password, resetting the password in cPanel under FTP Accounts if you are unsure. Use the full FTP username as shown in cPanel, which usually includes the domain such as [email protected], and set the server to your domain or server hostname rather than an IP.

Why is my FTP password being rejected when it is correct?

Common reasons are leftover spaces when the password was pasted, the FTP account having been removed or its password changed, the account being temporarily blocked by the firewall after repeated failed logins, or the client using the wrong username format. Resetting the password in cPanel and reconnecting usually clears it.

Does FTP 530 mean my account is blocked?

Not always, but repeated failed logins can trigger the server firewall to block your IP, which can also surface as a login failure or a connection that will not complete. If the password is correct and it still fails, your IP may be blocked and you should contact support to release it.

Quick Recap

  1. 530 means wrong credentials - the connection is fine, the login was rejected
  2. Main account uses your cPanel username and password
  3. Extra FTP accounts use the full [email protected] username
  4. Reset the password in cPanel and update it in FileZilla's Site Manager
  5. Too many failures can firewall-block your IP; use the unblock tool
