Domain Transfer Approval Process
When you transfer a domain name between registrars, the transfer must be approved by the domain registrant (the person listed as the owner in the WHOIS record). This is an ICANN requirement to prevent unauthorized domain transfers.
How the Approval Works
- The transfer is initiated by the receiving registrar (us, if you are transferring to Ultra Web Hosting)
- An approval email is sent to the administrative contact email address listed in the domain WHOIS record
- You must click the approval link in that email within the specified timeframe (usually 5 days)
- Once approved, the transfer processes and typically completes within 5 to 7 days
Common Issues
- Approval email not received: Check your spam folder. If WHOIS privacy is enabled, the email may go to the privacy service address instead of yours. Disable WHOIS privacy at your current registrar before starting the transfer.
- Wrong email on file: Update the administrative contact email at your current registrar before initiating the transfer.
- Domain locked: Your current registrar must unlock the domain before a transfer can begin. Look for a "Domain Lock" or "Transfer Lock" setting in your registrar dashboard.
If you are having trouble with a domain transfer, open a support ticket with your domain name and we will help track down the issue.
