How to Transfer Your Domain to Ultra Web Hosting

Purchase Questions | Updated March 2026

Transferring a domain name to Ultra Web Hosting means moving the domain registration itself (not just pointing it). This is optional. You can use a domain registered anywhere with our hosting by just changing nameservers. But if you want to manage everything in one place (hosting, billing, domain renewal), transferring the domain consolidates it all under your Ultra account.

01. Transfer vs Just Pointing

Just point nameservers

Keep Domain at Current Registrar

  • Change nameservers to ns1/ns2/ns3.ultranameservers.com
  • Domain stays registered where it is
  • Renew domain at current registrar
  • Takes minutes, no transfer process

02. Before You Start

Before initiating a transfer, prepare these at your current registrar:

  1. Unlock the domain - most registrars lock domains by default to prevent unauthorized transfers. Find "Domain Lock," "Transfer Lock," or "Registrar Lock" in your current registrar's dashboard and disable it
  2. Get the EPP/authorization code - this is a unique code that proves you own the domain. Your current registrar provides it, usually under "Transfer" or "Authorization Code" settings. Some registrars email it to you
  3. Verify your admin email - the email address on file for the domain's admin contact must be accessible. Transfer approval emails go there
  4. Domain must be 60+ days old - ICANN rules prevent transfers within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer
  5. Domain must not be expired - some registrars allow transfer of recently expired domains, but it's best to transfer while active

03. Step-by-Step Transfer Process

  1. Log into my.ultrawebhosting.com > Domains > Transfer Domains to Us
  2. Enter your domain name and the EPP/authorization code from your current registrar
  3. Complete payment - domain transfers include a 1-year renewal extension
  4. Watch for approval emails - you'll receive emails from both Ultra and your current registrar asking you to approve the transfer
  5. Approve the transfer - click the approval links in the emails
  6. Wait for completion - transfers typically take 5-7 days after approval. Some registrars process faster
Tip

Your website and email continue working during the transfer. The transfer only moves the domain registration. As long as nameservers are already pointed to Ultra, nothing changes for your visitors.

04. Who Approves the Transfer

Domain transfers require approval from the domain's administrative contact. This is the person listed as the admin in the domain's WHOIS record. If you registered the domain, that's you.

The approval process:

  • Ultra sends a transfer request to the current registrar
  • The current registrar emails the admin contact asking them to approve or deny the transfer
  • The admin clicks "Approve" in the email
  • If no response within 5 days, most registrars auto-approve the transfer (but some auto-deny, so always respond to the email)
Warning

If the admin email on the domain is outdated or inaccessible, you won't receive the approval email and the transfer will fail. Update the admin email at your current registrar before starting the transfer.

05. Is the Transfer Automatic?

No. We do not automatically transfer your domain when you sign up for hosting. Hosting and domain registration are separate services. When you sign up for hosting, you can choose to register a new domain, transfer an existing one, or simply point an existing domain to our servers without transferring.

If you purchased hosting and want to transfer your domain later, you can initiate it anytime from your client area under Domains > Transfer Domains to Us.

06. Common Transfer Issues

  • "Transfer rejected" - the domain is still locked at the current registrar. Unlock it and try again
  • "Invalid EPP code" - the authorization code was entered incorrectly or has expired. Request a fresh one from your current registrar
  • Never received approval email - check spam/junk folders. Verify the admin email on the domain's WHOIS is correct and accessible
  • "Domain is within 60 days" - ICANN prohibits transfers within 60 days of registration. Wait and try again
  • Transfer stuck pending - some registrars have a 5-day waiting period. If it's been longer than 7 days, contact both registrars
