cPanel and Outlook Phone App Results in Unable to Log In - Secure Connection Unavailable

Email & Webmail | Updated March 2026

If the Outlook mobile app (iOS or Android) cannot connect to your hosting email and shows "Unable to Log In" or "Secure Connection Unavailable," it's because the app is trying to use Exchange autodiscover, which doesn't work with cPanel hosting. The fix is to configure the account manually using IMAP settings.

Correct Settings

Use IMAP with manual configuration

When adding your account in the Outlook app, choose IMAP (not Exchange or Microsoft 365) and enter these settings manually:

  • Incoming: mail.yourdomain.com, Port 993, SSL/TLS
  • Outgoing: mail.yourdomain.com, Port 465, SSL/TLS
  • Username: Your full email address

01. Why This Happens

The Outlook mobile app tries Exchange autodiscover first when you enter an email address. Autodiscover queries DNS for an autodiscover.yourdomain.com record or checks yourdomain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml. On cPanel hosting, neither exists (they're for Exchange/Microsoft 365 servers), so the connection fails.

The "Secure Connection Unavailable" variant happens when the app falls back to testing various ports/encryption combinations and can't find one that works with the autodiscover protocol.

The solution is to bypass autodiscover entirely by selecting IMAP and entering the server settings manually.

02. Setting Up on iOS

  1. Open the Outlook app and tap the account icon > Add Account
  2. Enter your email address and tap "Add Account"
  3. When it fails or asks for provider, select "IMAP" (not Exchange, Office 365, or Outlook.com)
  4. Enter the incoming server: mail.yourdomain.com, Port 993, Security SSL/TLS
  5. Enter the outgoing server: mail.yourdomain.com, Port 465, Security SSL/TLS
  6. Enter your full email address as the username and your email password
  7. Tap Sign In
Tip

If the Outlook app doesn't offer an IMAP option, try using the built-in iOS Mail app instead (Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > Other). It provides more flexible IMAP configuration. See our iPhone email setup guide.

03. Setting Up on Android

  1. Open the Outlook app and tap Add Account
  2. Enter your email address
  3. Tap "Setup Account Manually" or look for "IMAP" in the provider list
  4. Select IMAP
  5. Enter incoming server: mail.yourdomain.com, Port 993, Security Type SSL/TLS
  6. Enter outgoing server: mail.yourdomain.com, Port 465, Security Type SSL/TLS
  7. Enter your credentials and tap Next/Sign In

If the Outlook app on Android doesn't provide manual IMAP options, use the built-in Gmail app or Samsung Email app instead. See our Android email setup guide.

04. Troubleshooting

Still can't connect after manual setup - Verify the password by logging into webmail at https://yourdomain.com/webmail. If webmail works, the password is correct and the issue is in the app's settings.

Firewall block - Multiple failed connection attempts (from autodiscover retries) can trigger a firewall block on your IP. Check using our firewall unblock tool. Try connecting on WiFi vs mobile data to test if one network is blocked.

Certificate warning - If you see a certificate warning, make sure you're using mail.yourdomain.com as the server hostname, not the bare domain or an IP address. The SSL certificate is issued to the mail subdomain. See Fixing SSL Certificate Warnings.

For the desktop Outlook setup, see How to Set Up Email in Microsoft Outlook.
