Your master mail account is the default email account that is automatically created with your cPanel hosting account. It uses your cPanel username and is tied to your primary domain. Here is what it is, how it works, and why you should create separate email accounts for everyday use instead.
01. What Is the Master Mail Account?
When your hosting account is set up, cPanel automatically creates an email account using your cPanel username as the address: cpaneluser@yourdomain.com. This is your master or default mail account.
This account:
- Uses the same password as your cPanel login
- Receives any email sent to your domain that does not match a specific email account (if you have not disabled the catch-all)
- Cannot be deleted through cPanel (it is part of the system account)
- Has the same disk quota as your overall hosting account
02. How to Access It
You can access the master mail account the same way as any other email account:
- Webmail: Go to
my.ultrawebhosting.com:2096and log in with your cPanel username and password - Email client: Set up Outlook, Thunderbird, or your phone using
cpaneluser@yourdomain.comas the username and your cPanel password. See Outlook setup or iPhone setup.
The master mail account password always matches your cPanel password. If you change your cPanel password, the master mail password changes with it. You cannot set a different password for this account.
03. Should You Use It?
We recommend not using the master mail account for everyday email. Here is why:
- Security - The master account shares the cPanel password. If someone gets your email password, they also have your cPanel password. A dedicated email account has its own separate password.
- Professionalism - An address like
info@yourdomain.comorcontact@yourdomain.comlooks more professional thanabc123@yourdomain.com(your cPanel username may not be human-friendly). - Catch-all spam - By default, the master account can act as a catch-all, receiving email for any non-existent address at your domain. This attracts a lot of spam.
04. Create Proper Email Accounts Instead
Create dedicated email accounts in cPanel for your actual use:
- Go to cPanel > Email > Email Accounts
- Click "Create"
- Enter the address you want (info@, contact@, yourname@, etc.)
- Set a strong, unique password (different from your cPanel password)
- Set a storage quota or leave unlimited
- Click "Create"
For more details, see How to Create Email Accounts and Aliases.
To stop the master account from receiving catch-all email, go to cPanel > Email > Default Address and set it to "Discard" or "Return to sender." This prevents random spam from piling up in the master mailbox.
