What Does POP3 Stand For?
POP3 stands for Post Office Protocol version 3. It is a standard internet protocol used by email clients to retrieve email messages from a mail server.
How POP3 Works
When your email client (like Outlook or Thunderbird) connects using POP3, it downloads messages from the server to your local device. By default, POP3 then deletes the messages from the server, although most email clients let you change this behavior to leave a copy on the server.
POP3 vs IMAP
POP3 is best for users who check email from one device and want messages stored locally. IMAP is the better choice for most users today because it keeps email on the server and syncs across all devices (phone, laptop, tablet, webmail). With IMAP, a message you read on one device shows as read everywhere.
