The "IP Address Has Changed" error in Webmail is a session security feature. It appears when your IP address changes mid-session, which the server interprets as a potential session hijacking attempt. This commonly happens on mobile networks, VPNs, or ISPs that rotate IP addresses frequently. The fix is simple: just log in again.
Just Log In Again
This error logs you out for security. Simply log back into Webmail and continue. Your email is not affected.
- ✓ Your email data is safe - nothing was lost or changed
- ✓ The error is a security precaution, not a malfunction
- ✓ If it happens constantly, see the prevention tips below
01. Why This Happens
When you log into Webmail, the server creates a session tied to your IP address. If your IP changes while you're still logged in, the server detects the mismatch and ends the session to prevent someone else from using your session cookie if it was intercepted.
Common causes of mid-session IP changes:
- Mobile network - cell towers hand off your connection as you move, changing your IP
- VPN - VPN servers can rotate your exit IP, especially free VPNs
- ISP with dynamic IPs - some ISPs reassign IP addresses periodically
- Load-balanced corporate network - office networks with multiple internet connections may route traffic through different IPs
- Wi-Fi to cellular switch - switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or vice versa) changes your IP
02. How to Fix It
Log in again. That's the immediate fix. The error is designed to force a re-authentication when the IP changes.
If you were composing an email when the error appeared, the draft may have been auto-saved. Check your Drafts folder after logging back in.
03. Preventing It From Recurring
- Stay on one network - don't switch between Wi-Fi and cellular while using Webmail
- Use a stable VPN - if you use a VPN, choose one with a static exit IP or "dedicated IP" feature
- Use an email client instead - Outlook, Thunderbird, or your phone's mail app maintain their own connection and don't have this issue. See our setup guides for Outlook, iPhone, or Android
This error cannot be disabled on the server as it's a security feature of the webmail session management. If it happens frequently, using an IMAP email client is the best long-term solution since IMAP connections handle IP changes gracefully.
For other webmail issues, see our Webmail Access Denied guide or the full Email Troubleshooting Guide.
Happening Constantly?
If this error occurs on every login attempt even without changing networks, open a ticket. There may be a proxy or firewall on your network causing the issue.
