"IP Address Has Changed" Error in Webmail
The error "IP Address Has Changed" can appear in cPanel webmail (Roundcube or Horde) when your public IP address changes during your session. This is a security feature designed to prevent session hijacking.
Why It Happens
- Weak DHCP lease from your ISP: Some ISPs rotate your IP address frequently, which triggers this error mid-session
- VPN or proxy: If you use a VPN that rotates exit nodes, your apparent IP changes with each rotation
- Mobile networks: Cellular connections frequently change IP addresses as you move between towers
- Load-balanced corporate networks: Some office networks route traffic through multiple gateways
How to Fix It
- Log in again. The simplest fix is to log back in. If it happens occasionally, this is the easiest workaround.
- Use a stable connection. If you are on Wi-Fi, switching to a wired connection may help stabilize your IP.
- Disable VPN. If you are using a VPN, try disconnecting it while accessing webmail.
- Use an email client instead. If this happens frequently, consider using an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird with IMAP. Email clients maintain their own connection and are not affected by browser session IP checks.
