A sitemap is an XML file that lists all the pages on your website, helping search engines discover and index your content more efficiently. Here is how to create and submit one.
WordPress creates a sitemap automatically
Since WordPress 5.5, a sitemap is generated automatically at yourdomain.com/wp-sitemap.xml. For more control, install Yoast SEO or Rank Math which generate enhanced sitemaps with priority settings and image references.
01. Submit to Google
- Go to Google Search Console
- Add and verify your website if you have not already
- Go to Sitemaps in the left menu
- Enter your sitemap URL (e.g.,
https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml) - Click Submit
02. Non-WordPress Sites
For static HTML sites or custom applications, use an online sitemap generator like xml-sitemaps.com. Upload the generated sitemap.xml to your public_html root directory.
