Outlook: Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication

Outlook: Unable to Logon Using Secure Password Authentication

If you receive this error in Outlook, it means Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is enabled in your account settings. Our mail servers do not support SPA. You need to disable it.

How to Fix It

  1. In Outlook, go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings
  2. Double-click your email account
  3. Click More Settings
  4. Go to the Outgoing Server tab
  5. Make sure "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" is checked
  6. Make sure "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)" is unchecked
  7. Go to the Advanced tab and uncheck SPA there as well if it appears
  8. Click OK and test

SPA is a Microsoft-specific authentication method primarily used with Exchange servers. Standard cPanel hosting email uses normal password authentication. After disabling SPA, your connection should work with the standard settings (IMAP port 993 SSL, SMTP port 465 SSL).
