The server does not support publishing via http

Getting Started | Updated 2026

The "server does not support publishing via HTTP" error appears in older website design tools (like Microsoft Expression Web, Adobe Contribute, or iWeb) that try to upload files using HTTP publishing (WebDAV). This method is not supported on our servers. Use FTP instead.

Solution

Publish via FTP, not HTTP

Change your publishing method from HTTP to FTP in your web design software's publish settings. Use mail.yourdomain.com or your domain as the FTP host, your cPanel username and password, and set the remote directory to public_html.

01. FTP Publishing Settings

  • FTP Host: Your domain name or server hostname
  • Username: Your cPanel username
  • Password: Your cPanel password
  • Remote directory: /public_html (or /public_html/subdirectory for addon domains)
  • Port: 21
  • Passive mode: Enable if your software offers this option
Modern Workflow

Most modern web development has moved to standalone FTP clients like FileZilla rather than built-in publishing. See How to Use FileZilla for a full setup guide. Build your site locally, then upload via FTP.
