Error codes 0x800CCC90 and 0x800CCC92 in Microsoft Outlook indicate that the email client cannot log into your mail server. The most common cause is an incorrect password, but there are several other settings that can trigger these errors.
Reset your email password in cPanel and update Outlook
The 0x800CCC90 error almost always means an authentication failure. Log into cPanel, go to Email Accounts, click "Manage" next to the affected account, and set a new password. Then update the password in Outlook's account settings. This resolves the issue in the majority of cases.
01. What These Error Codes Mean
0x800CCC90 means "Your incoming (POP3) mail server has reported an error." In plain terms, Outlook tried to log into the POP3 server and was rejected.
0x800CCC92 (often seen alongside 0x800CCC90) means "Your mail server has responded that you do not have an account on the server." This is a more specific version of the same problem: the server does not recognize the username or password Outlook is sending.
Both errors point to the same root cause: Outlook cannot authenticate with the mail server.
02. Fix 1: Verify Your Password
The fastest way to confirm the password is correct is to test it in webmail:
- Go to my.ultrawebhosting.com:2096 (webmail login)
- Enter your full email address and password
- If you can log in, the password is correct and the problem is in Outlook's stored credentials
- If you cannot log in, reset the password in cPanel
To Reset the Password in cPanel
- Log into cPanel at my.ultrawebhosting.com
- Go to Email > Email Accounts
- Find the account and click "Manage"
- Set a new password (use the Generate button for a strong password)
- Click "Update Email Settings"
- Update the password in Outlook (File > Account Settings > select the account > Change)
When updating the password in Outlook, make sure "Remember password" is checked. Also check for any saved credentials in Windows Credential Manager (Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials). Old cached credentials there can override what you set in Outlook.
03. Fix 2: Check Your Server Settings
Verify these settings in Outlook (File > Account Settings > select account > Change):
- Your Name: Whatever you want recipients to see
- Email Address: Your full email address (e.g.,
you@yourdomain.com) - Account Type: POP3 or IMAP (see POP3 vs IMAP for guidance)
- Incoming mail server:
mail.yourdomain.com - Outgoing mail server (SMTP):
mail.yourdomain.com - User Name: Your full email address (not just the part before @)
- Password: The password set in cPanel
The username must be your full email address (e.g., john@yourdomain.com), not just john. Using only the username portion without the domain will cause authentication to fail with this exact error.
04. Fix 3: Encryption and Port Settings
Click "More Settings" > "Advanced" tab and verify:
For POP3
- Incoming server port: 995 (with SSL/TLS) or 110 (with STARTTLS or none)
- Encryption type: SSL/TLS for port 995, STARTTLS for port 110
For IMAP
- Incoming server port: 993 (with SSL/TLS) or 143 (with STARTTLS or none)
- Encryption type: SSL/TLS for port 993, STARTTLS for port 143
Outgoing (SMTP)
- Port: 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS)
- Encryption: Match the port as above
Also check the "Outgoing Server" tab and make sure "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" is checked. See our full setup guide: How to Set Up Email in Microsoft Outlook.
05. Fix 4: Firewall and IP Blocks
If you (or someone else using your email) entered the wrong password multiple times, the server firewall may have temporarily blocked your IP address. Failed login attempts trigger brute-force protection, which blocks the IP for a period of time.
Use our Firewall Unblock tool to check if your IP is blocked and unblock it.
After unblocking, make sure you update Outlook with the correct password before it tries to connect again, otherwise it will get blocked again immediately.
